A Picture Paints 100 Years

Essex County Cricket Club are excited with the unveiling of the Thatchers Mural, a new signature piece of artwork at the Ambassador Cruise Line Ground, highlighting one hundred years of cricket at Chelmsford.

Designed and installed by MurWalls, the mural was unveiled at the end of August during Essex Men’s Metro Bank One Day Cup match against Glamorgan Men.

Located at the back of the Achilleus Security Stand, the Thatchers Mural captures key historical moments from a century of cricket at Chelmsford.

The artwork features former Club Captain Ryan ten Doeschate lifting the Division One trophy at Chelmsford in 2017, the 1992 County Championship-winning team with Club Ambassador Graham Gooch OBE pouring a drink over Neil Foster, Graham Napier’s legendary 152* off 58 balls against Sussex in 2008, the celebration of women’s cricket at Chelmsford, Gooch’s iconic batting, and the hosting of international fixtures such as the 1999 Men’s World Cup – which saw Zimbabwe defeat South Africa and New Zealand beat Bangladesh, as well as more recent and frequently England Women’s matches.

Lorraine Fletcher, Head of Business Operations at Essex Cricket said: “We are incredibly proud to have worked with Thatchers on this special project, which celebrates both our shared heritage and the unforgettable moments that make Chelmsford such a unique home for cricket.

“The mural is not only a striking tribute to 100 years of history at Chelmsford but also a reflection of the community spirit, passion, and energy that our partners and supporters bring to every matchday.

“It is a fantastic way to commemorate our partnership and to give fans something that will inspire memories for years to come.”

Phillip McTeer, Head of Marketing at Thatchers Cider said: “As a proud sponsor, we are thrilled to be part of Essex Cricket’s 100th Anniversary celebrations with a brand-new mural that fans can enjoy for years to come.

“The specially commissioned artwork, which also marks the renewal of our support for the club, beautifully captures the unbeatable atmosphere of matchdays at Chelmsford. There’s exciting action on the pitch, fans enjoying a pint of cider from the stands and our iconic hot air balloons seen flying over.

“The fans are the beating heart of the club, and it’s lovely to be able to give back to them with this vibrant reflection of what they bring to the ground. We hope they love it as much as we do.”
